The average prices here in America is around $60, but be carefull where you buy it because they can range from $30-$120. You could end up getting some cheap wood like araça, which will break easily and the sound is not the best one for sure. Also, pay attention when buy from the internet. We never know what we are getting. Best choices: Try to buy “live” or make sure for example that you got it in “Biriba” wood.
* Capoeira ganha registro importante com o documentário "Mestre Bimba - A Capoeira Iluminada" do carioca Luiz Fernando Goulart.
Hoje em dia é muito comum se ver vários tipos de propaganda e vídeo clip mostrando a cultura Brasileira e especificamente a Baiana tendo em seu conteúdo a imagem de uma roda de capoeira. No exterior a capoeira é um legitimo representante da cultura brasileira e de similar importância como o próprio samba. E o maior responsável por essa transformação da capoeira, que ao longo da história deixou de ser taxado como crime para ser uma das mais importantes e autênticas formas de expressão da difusão de nossa cultura nacional no exterior, foi Manoel dos Reis Machado (1899-1974), que ficou eternizado como Mestre Bimba. Trinta e três anos após sua morte (2007), o soteropolitano do Engenho Velho de Brotas que inventou a capoeira regional, ganha uma justa homenagem no documentário "Mestre Bimba - A Capoeira Iluminada", quarta fita dirigida pelo carioca Luiz Fernando Goulart, 66 anos. Goulart assim com muitos outros Brasileiros, desconhecia a importância de Mestre Bimba até o convite, em 2004, para dirigir o documentário. Não era a primeira vez que a capoeira batia à porta de Goulart. O diretor já tinha vindo a Salvador em 1974, enviado pelo Ministério da Educação, para filmar um pequeno documentário da primeira reforma do Pelourinho, justamente na época em que Bimba morria em Goiânia. Na época os locais baianos o perguntaram do porque não filmavam também outro mestre - Pastinha, que estava quase morrendo, e esquecido. Mas o material que Goulart e sua equipe tinha na época apenas dava para produzir 1 único documentário (diferente dos recursos digitais de hoje).
O documentário foi exibido pela primeira vez na segunda semana do mês de agosto no Rio e São Paulo para em seguida, na terceira semana ser apresentado em Salvador na capital baiana. Para a pesquisa sobre o documentário, os primeiros contatos vieram através do livro do jornalista Muniz Sodré, Mestre Bimba - Corpo de Mandinga, que também foi aluno de Bimba e apelidado pelo mestre como Americano. Em entrevista ao jornal A Tarde de Salvador, o diretor Goulart mencionou que foi no livro do jornalista que percebeu que não iria contar apenas a história de um capoeirista, mas sim de um educador popular que mesmo analfabeto se torna um líder intelectual. Goulart pegou muitos depoimentos de antigos alunos de Bimba (e de diferente classes sociais), mas pouquíssimas imagens sobre o mestre foram registradas. Os registros mais conhecidos no Brasil são de imagens do baiano Jair Moura, um aluno de Bimba. As melhores imagens vieram do exterior quando o diretor descobriu dois vídeos raros que foram restaurados pelo mesmo: o encontro entre Bimba e o saxofonista americano de jazz Charlie 'Byrd' Parker, e imagens gravadas e exibidas apenas por uma tevê francesa, que mostra uma roda de capoeira com Bimba em cores. Esse fato segundo Goulart é de muita importância já que mostra como realmente era a capoeira de Bimba. Em conseqüência de poucas imagens registradas esse fato se torna de fundamental importância para tirar dúvidas afirmou o diretor na entrevista ao Jornal A Tarde.

* Projeto do Governo Brasileiro Financiará Inclusão Social Por Meio da Capoeira.
Iniciativas que promovam a capoeira como instrumento de cidadania e inclusão social no Brasil vão receber financiamentos de mais de R$900 mil por meio do projeto Capoeira Viva, lançado último dia 17 de agosto pelo Ministério da Cultura do Brasil (MinC). O projeto visa apoiar oficinas, pesquisas, documentários, acervos culturais e outras ações sócio-educativas voltadas para a promoção da atividade. O objetivo, segundo o secretário executivo do ministério da cultura, Juca Ferreira, é reconhecer oficialmente a capoeira como uma arte genuinamente brasileira. Segundo o ministro "A capoeira é uma das principais manifestações culturais do país e até hoje não recebeu o devido reconhecimento do Estado brasileiro". "Ela sempre foi tratada com preconceito porque é proveniente dos escravos, dos negros libertos e dos afrodescendentes, por isso esse movimento é importante". O Capoeira Viva, patrocinado pela Petrobras, vai promover três seminários nacionais sobre arte e criação de um site sobre o tema. Também vai escolher 50 mestres que, por sua participação na preservação da capoeira, receberão bolsas no valor de R$ 900 por seis meses. Em troca, os escolhidos vão dar depoimentos em oficinas e palestras e contribuir com suas experiências para estudos e publicações sobre a atividade. De acordo com o mestre Camisa, fundador da Associação Brasileira de Apoio e desenvolvimento da Arte Capoeira (Abadá-Capoeira), a iniciativa é fundamental para despertar o orgulho no povo brasileiro da sua cultura. Segundo mestre camisa "O mais importante desse projeto será a proposta social de enxergar a capoeira como uma ferramenta para o povo abrasileirar sua cultura. O Brasil primeiro precisa se conhecer e valorizar sua cultura para depois entender os elementos de outras culturas que chegam aqui através do cinema e da televisão, por exemplo". A capoeira hoje é praticada por cerca de 40 mil pessoas em mais de 100 países ao redor do mundo.

* Quero aproveitar este espaço para homenagear o meu "pai negro" MESTRE CHIBATA. Um dos grandes e verdadeiros Mestres do Brasil, nativo da Ilha de Itaparica, morou no Rio, e treinando com seu tio WALDEMAR SANTANA, trabalhou muito divulgando a capoeira no Brasil e no exterior. Sem dúvida "educou verdadeiramente" muitos capoeiristas aqui em Brasília.
Me ensinou a ser guerreira, mas sem deixar de lado um sólido conjunto de valores morais.
E hoje passados mais de dez anos em que ele foi jogar na "Grande roda lá do Céu", é o grande responsável pelo meu vício por malhação, e pelo meu grande amor pela capoeira!

* For those looking for study, have more knowledge and having Capoeira fun in Brazil, Salvador in Bahia is the palce to go, you got capoeira around every corner, definitely the capital of the capoeira world. Lots of intensity. But if you're looking for something more chilled out, anywhere along the coast from North to South, you will find decent players and vibes. Personally, I fell in love with Sao Luis in the State of Maranhao. They have a great Angola scene and it's a lot more friendly- i.e. You won't have nearly the ego BS you have to deal with in other places. From Jason, Mountain View, NY. Obs: Besides, Sao Luis is the Brazilian Regaee capital!
* Certain people better watch their “chauvinistic” attitudes about women and Capoeira if they ever go to Brasil or a female dominated Capoeira group, “cause they'll get in that as...”, especially in Brazil. Real Malandros and Mandingueiros know better…Capoeira is a survival art, out of all the martial arts this is one of the very few that came out of survival. Most other martial arts are based off of just defending yourself, not surviving. It was survival mentally, spiritually, and physically. Mentally they had to have malicia/malandragem. The arts of knowing how to dig holes underneath your opponents feet while they watch you do it, knowing how to make something look like it's in more than one place at a time, or like it's in a different place than it really is. It's know that when you're in a crowd of people you always need to be alert, because out of everyone there someone has that knife, gun, or club. Knowing that when you see that cop approach you and he has that look in his eyes, you need to slip out or be ready to add his billy club/nighstick to your collection (read Acordeon's book Capoeira: An Afro-Brazilian Martial Art, you'll know what I'm saying then). Spiritually by the music, the Axe', the energia, the fun, the dance, the game… Capoeira liberated their soul no matter how hard their day was, they let it all go and played a game that will never die and never be forgotten. Capoeira was a stress/depression/saudade killer for them. Physically by getting stronger, having harder/faster strikes, having good form, being able to do these movements without even thinking about it because your body knows them so well, being able to push your body to another level, being in shape, being flexible, and helping your body learn to do new things that can give you an edge. Malicia was one of the most important things back then though, because if you're not tricky and you're not street smart you're not going to survive. When it comes down to it though, the spirituality is the most important, because if you don't have good spirits and you don't feel like living none of that other stuff will matter. Not wanting to strive to be free and happy will stop you from learning any of this, and without good spirituality you're screwed. Malicia, it's the second most important. The Axe'/Energia, is THE most important. So, the physicality means nothing without those two. If you can do good hard kicks, it wont matter if you don't know how to get an opening to use it, and that's where malicia comes in. I've seen some really sloppy players work the crap out of other players because they have more malicia/malandragem, and in the end they "survive". Also, you'll never be motivated to learn those things if you're not in good spirits, and you wont play well if you're playing angry, or if you're depressed or something like that. Physicality is most defiantly the lowest on the totem pole, but NEVER forget it. * What some folks have to understand is that not all people who do capoeira, really GET capoeira. A lot people join because they think it's cool and they want to try something new. A lot of beginners just start off that way... If they really are dedicated to the art, they will eventually learn the history, develop the understandings of malicia and malandagrem, and hopefully gain the spirituality that you are so affected by. It does get frustrating when people who have been doing capoeira for a while just aren't that in to it (by means of learning the history, etc.) but it's just part of their journey through capoeira. * I just started capoeira and feel deeply affected by the roots and symbolism of the game. As I am reading every capoeira book that i can find, it seems to me that a lot of people who profess to be capoeiristas just dont get it. They learn moves and sequences instead of conversation, give and take, malicia, and movements “agarrados”. When I say movements “agarrados”, I mean the art of getting in the way of your opponent throwing off his rhythm, so he can't complete his move and under his feet so his moves have no effect, instead of actually grabbing him. Does it seem that some people don't get the ritualistic side or is it just a lack of interest on their part? I see people who have either no concept of “malicia” and are robotic and predictable in their movements or too much malicia, where it is no fun to play w them, cause if you play their game of finding weaknesses they get more and more aggressive. Or am i so novice that i am missing the point entirely? From Russ, Salt Lake City.
* Mestre Deputado Wise Words...” We can affirm that the activity in the academies did not bring the content of the game to decadence because it continued to be practiced in the rodas for recreation, playing and relaxing. And it was these masters, teaching people humility in the yards of their homes, on the beaches, at the fair and at the plazas, who became the anonymous heroes that preserved the capoeira game in its true form, away from the commercialization of the academies that were free to introduce exotic innovations. It is to the anonymous capoeiristas, those who transmitted the secrets of the game for love of the art without the prestige and shelter that comes with the authorities, or political entities that we owe the rare and authentic capoeira masters of today. These masters now have their own spaces in the academies. The reality is that teaching in academies is a way to practice the game in our social environment.”

* Capoeira Angola e Capoeira Regional = Capoeira Moderna, talvez... Atualmente, temos uma nova geracao e uma nova capoeira regional, chamada por ums como ``moderna´´, e que tem como caracteristicas principais uma ginga contraida e fixa, sem a atualizacao do floreio, com a velocidade excessiva na execucao dos seus movimentos e apurado nivel tecnico nos poucos golpes aplicados de forma repetitiva (meias luas e rabos de arraia).Sem muita preocupacao com a parte defensiva, alem dos saltos mirabolantes, tomados de emprestimo da gisnastica acrobatica, executados com extrema velocidade, exigindo que o praticante seja um excelente atleta. Somando-se a tudo isso, nota-se a ausencia completa dos antigos rituais e preceitos da capoeira tradicional, bateria acelerada e sem criterio definido, canticos totalmente descaracterizados e, em determinados grupos, o que e mais preocupante, a permisao do uso de golpes originarios de outras lutas. Isso vem descaracterizando cada vez mais a nossa arte. Temos observado tambem na capoeira angola uma evolucao constante, o que culminou com o nascimento na decada de 80, de uma estilo novo e comtemporaneo, bonito e eficiente, e que vem tendo uma grande aceitacao entre os mais jovens, baseada no jogo do Mestre Joao Grande de Nova York, e tendo como maior representante maior no Brasil, Mestre Moraes, seu aluno que, alem das outras caracteristicas tradicionais, apresenta uma ginga descontraida e solta, embora com ritmo e floreio semelantes entre si. à Palavras de Jose Luis Oliveira Cruz, o Mestre Bola Sete.
* Contemporanea or Regional -Contemporanea is a name given to the capoeira developed by the Senzala group in Rio in the '60s and the groups that derived from them (Capoeira Brasil and Abada are the two that I know, but I'm sure there are many more). The founders of Senzala studied some in Bahia with Mestres Bimba and Pashinha, but not for long periods of time (mostly in the summers when they were visiting), so they developed their own style while in Rio.
