Are you ready to dance Funk? Los Angeles residente DJ Potira is stepping up her Brazilian roots with a new monthly funk night in Hollywood, California. After successfully performing the set in venues such as Barcopa (now named Pink Elephant), in Santa Monica, and Broadway Bar, in downtown LA, she returns on Saturday, January 14, from 10 pm to 2 am, with “Brasil Baile Funk 9”.
The party, featuring Rio de Janeiro’s sexiest and most popular music genre will run every second Saturday of the month at Bronson Bar (5851 W Sunset Blvd, Hollywood), and the admission is free. Brasil Baile Funk is a part of a series of events that DJ Potira brings to the city in order to promote the uniqueness of Brazilian Culture.
Baile Funk, also called Funk Carioca, is a musical style originated in Rio de Janeiro’s favelas, the city’s slums, in the early 1980’s – and it’s very diferente from the funk eternalized by James Brown. The rhythm was once direct derivative of Miami bass and had as its main influence the single Planet Rock of Africa Bambaaataa and Soul Force, launched in 1982. Despite the American impact, Baile Funk quickly became a genuine expression of Rio’s social issues that burdens the poor and the black people in Brazil, including controversial topics such as drugs, violence, and strong sex appeal.
“The contagious rhythm of this party encourages even wallflowers to get on the dance floor and shake their hips, swaying with the raucous crowd”, says Potira. She is carioca, from Rio de Janeiro, and she is living in Los Angeles since 2000. Potira has immersed herself in the local music scene by landing residency at different venues (Aqua Lounge) and festivals (FiGat 7th Festival) and also working for major brands such as Chanel, Teen Vogue, Elle Magazine and LA Fashion Week.
